Court remands NSCDC official over alleged employment scam

Justice Binta Nyako of Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, yesterday, remanded an official of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Mrs Tosin Comfort Olagunju, in Suleja correctional facility, pending the hearing of her bail application scheduled for October 9.

Olagunju was arraigned on a four-count charge, accused of obtaining N12,400,000 from job seekers under false pretence, and with a promise to help them get employed in NSCDC.

The defendant, who resides in Karu Site, Abuja, pleaded not guilty when the charge, marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/183/2024, filed in the name of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), was read to her.

After the plea, the prosecuting counsel, Princewill Eke, applied for a date for the commencement of trial. Responding, the defendant’s counsel, M. A. Oloniruka, informed the court that he had just filed a bail application shortly before the court commenced sitting.

Upon being told by the judge that the application was not in the court’s file and therefore was not ripe for hearing, Oloniruka sought to apply orally for his client’s bail.

But Justice Nyako rejected his request, noting that the court is a court of record, hence all applications must be formal, and in writing.
Consequently, the judge adjourned till October 9, for trial and remanded the defendant.
